What is SAARP?
SAARP is Statoil’s research program with the ARCTOS Network of Marine Ecologists.
SAARP supports Statoil's goal of environmentally responsible development in the Arctic, providing knowledge on ecosystem processes and ecotoxicology in the Pan-Arctic.
Much of the Northern Seas oil and gas activities will take place in geographical areas and under climatic conditions where previous experience is limited. This applies to both technological and environmental aspects of the development activities. Given the high level of concern for the environment, it is obvious that the oil industry will need to stringently document that their environmental performance is acceptable.
The development of a “Barents Environmental Standard” is linked to successful cooperation with Russia. The two sides’ environmental experts must have the same basic understanding of the Barents Sea ecosystem, and of the main environmental challenges connected to introducing oil and gas activities to the region. The two sides must agree to establish comparable tools for controlling the environmental performance. This objective can only be achieved by integrating Russian experts into the work from the beginning, and continuing their participation over the long term.
